Our Living Seas

Southern Visayas - Biodiversity II

The Philippines has a unique biodiverse marine habitat. However Blast Fishing is reported to continue in some areas. A study conducted in 2002 reported destructive fishing methods had caused the degradation of about 70% of Philippine coral reefs. Reef destruction wipes out the fish populations. In 2012 the director of the Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources declared an "all-out war" against dynamite fishing and can be penalized by 5-10 years of imprisonment. Donations to any organization that educates against blast fishing and teaches alternative fishing habits needs our support.
